Vivek Sreejithkumar, a senior at Florida Atlantic University High School and a dual-enrolled undergraduate student researcher in the Department of Mathematical Sciences, received the 2021 Rising Scientist Award from the Child Mind Institute.
As a Rising Scientist, Vivek will be awarded a $2,000 scholarship for college expenses from the Child Mind Institute and Hunter College.
Sreejithkumar conducted mathematical modeling alongside mathematical biologist and Associate Professor, Necibe Tuncer, Ph.D., to analyze the spread of the COVID-19 disease in Florida using incidence and disease-induced death data from the Florida Department of Health.
Sreejithkumar wrote the paper "The Evolution of the Identifiable Analysis of the COVID-19 Virus," published in the Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics, as part of the work he conducted with Associate Professor Tuncer. Read the paper here .

Vivel Sreejithkumar has also been named one of the top 300 Scholars in the 81st Regeneron Science Talent Search—the nation’s oldest and most prestigious science and mathematics competition for high school seniors.

They were selected from 1,804 students who entered from 603 high schools across 46 states, Washington, DC, Puerto Rico and eight other countries.
Vivek will receive $2,000, and his school will also receive $2,000 per scholar to use toward STEM-related activities.
