The Cryptography faculty and staff in the Department on Mathematics and Statistics at Florida Atlantic University (FAU) hosted the 5th Young CryptograpHers Cybersecurity Summer Camp (YCCSC) in the Sandbox during the week of August 5, 2024, and was held in the Sandbox located in the Wimberly Library. The YCCSC was funded in part by grants from the American Mathematical Society and the Mathematical Association of America. There were 27 high school young ladies in attendance.
The Young CryptograpHers Cybersecurity Summer Camp presented lectures, projects and challenges for the girls on public-key cryptography, lattice-based cryptography, zero-knowledge, coding and decoding. There were three women who teach and work in the Cybersecurity field to come to FAU and speak to the young ladies about their own educational paths and how their paths led them to the job they hold at prestigious universities around the country. They also spoke to the girls about their educational pathways and how those paths may lead to cybersecurity position in business, industry and government as well. The invited speakers were Dr. Lubjana Beshaj, Associate Professor at the United States Military Academy at West Point; Dr. Ryann Cartor, Assistant Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics and Clemson University; and Dr. Peihan Miao, Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science at Brown University. Our own Dr. William Hahn gave and impressive and inspiring talk on AI and Cryptography on Friday morning and was enjoyed by everyone.
We will begin planning for the 6th Young CryptograpHers Cybersecurity Camp in the upcoming weeks and will plan to host the event in the Sandbox once more next summer. We now have three students who attended the camp enrolling at FAU in Fall, 2024! The faculty in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics continues its long history in strong community outreach and continues to bring the very “Best-of-the-best” student to our outstanding university! Go Owls!
