Florida Atlantic University Alumnus Dr. Emmanuel Fleurantin Completes Prestigious NSF ASCEND Fellowship and Joins Morehouse College Faculty

Florida Atlantic University is proud to celebrate the accomplishments of alumnus Dr. Emmanuel Fleurantin, who has successfully completed a prestigious three-year National Science Foundation (NSF) ASCEND Postdoctoral Fellowship and has accepted a tenure-track faculty position at Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia.

Dr. Fleurantin earned his Ph.D. in Mathematics from Florida Atlantic University in 2021. Shortly thereafter, he was selected for the highly competitive NSF ASCEND Postdoctoral Fellowship, a fully funded three-year award designed to support outstanding early-career scientists while broadening participation of underrepresented groups in academia and the nation’s scientific workforce.

Beginning in January 2022, Dr. Fleurantin conducted his postdoctoral research at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill under the mentorship of Dr. Chris Jones, Bill Guthridge Distinguished Professor of Mathematics. The fellowship provided advanced research opportunities while preparing participants for successful transitions into academic faculty careers.

During his appointment, Dr. Fleurantin investigated the mathematics underlying rate-induced tipping, a phenomenon in which systems experience abrupt changes when external conditions evolve too rapidly. His research explored both the theoretical foundations and practical applications of these complex dynamical systems. He later expanded his work to study noise-facilitated rate-induced tipping and the computational methods necessary to analyze such behavior. In addition, he examined the challenge of assimilating data into systems undergoing sudden transitions, contributing to a growing area of research with implications across the mathematical, physical, and environmental sciences.

“The ASCEND Fellowship provided an extraordinary opportunity to advance my research while developing as a scholar, educator, and mentor,” said Fleurantin. “Working with Dr. Chris Jones and collaborating with leading researchers at UNC–Chapel Hill helped shape my growth as an applied mathematician and prepared me for the next stage of my academic career.”

The NSF ASCEND Fellowship emphasizes both research excellence and leadership development, supporting postdoctoral scholars as they prepare for faculty positions and future leadership roles in higher education. Throughout the fellowship, Dr. Fleurantin published promising research and strengthened his commitment to mentoring students, particularly those from historically underrepresented communities in STEM disciplines.

His achievements reflect Florida Atlantic University’s commitment to developing talented scholars who make meaningful contributions to research, education, and society.

Now, as a tenure-track faculty member at Morehouse College, Dr. Fleurantin will continue his research program while inspiring and mentoring the next generation of mathematicians.

Florida Atlantic University congratulates Dr. Emmanuel Fleurantin on this significant accomplishment and wishes him continued success in his academic career.
