The Department of Mathematical Sciences is pleased to announce that Dr. Papiya Bhattacharjee, Instructor and Graduate Faculty, Florida Atlantic University, received the United States Distance Learning Association’s (USDLA) Innovation Award in conjunction with FAU's Center for Online and Continuing Education (COCE), one of the world's most prestigious distance learning awards at a virtual meeting held on July 23, 2020. The award is for the development of the “Methods of Calculus eText adaptation.” The Methods of Calculus eText is a free open educational resource (OER), provided at no cost to students.
These prestigious USDLA International Awards are presented annually to organizations and individuals engaged in their outstanding achievements in the development and delivery of distance learning programs. The USDLA is dedicated to excellence in distance learning to individuals, organizations and companies.
Dr. Bhattacharjee’s and the COCE’s work impacts our students by providing substantial savings, providing hope and inspiration in times of hardship. Thanks to her accomplishments, 1,869 FAU students collectively saved $390,602.31 from Fall 2019 – Summer 2020. Of these 1,869 students, 585 were/are registered as distance learning students. The distance learning students have saved $122,259.15 collectively. Students are saving more than $200 each by not having to purchase the previously required traditional textbook for this course. Eight other FAU instructors have adopted Dr. Bhattacharjee’s eText.
Dr. Bhattacharjee earned a Ph.D. in Mathematics from Bowling Green State University in 2009. Her research interests include Ordered Algebraic Structures; Theories of Frames (Pointfree Topology), Lattice-Ordered Groups, and Commutative Rings; Rings of Continuous Functions; Point-Set Topology.
