Linear Algebra

Welcome to my Linear Algebra course MAS 5145! We meet MWF 9:00 - 9:50 AM in BU 102. It may be possible for M.S. students to register for the course as a Directed Independent Study.

Topics

This course is a one-semester introduction to the foundations of the linear algebra. The plan is to cover most of the material in the first 9 chapters in our textbook: Vector spaces, linear independece, dimension, linear transformations; the endomorphism algebra of a vector space, eigenvalues, eigenspaces; inner product spaces; characteristic and minimal polynomials, canonical form theorems; duality; orthogonal transformations.

Textbook

Charles W. Curtis, Linear Algebra, an introductory approach, Springer Undergraduate Texts in Mathematics, 1996.

Credit

Homework:  There will be homework assignments every week or every other week. Some of the homework problems will occur on one of the tests or in the final exam.

Tests:   There will be six 50 minute tests on Friday, September 4 and 18, October 5, 19, and November 4 (Wednesday), 16. The five best tests will count for 60% of the grade.

Final Exam:   The final exam will take place on Friday, December 4, 7:45 - 10:15 a.m. It will count for 40% of the grade.
