**Course Description:**

This is a first course in statistics and statistical inference. It will cover most of the Chapters 6-10 from the textbook: Estimation, Tests of Statistical Hypotheses, Nonparametric Methods, Bayesian Methods, and Some Theory.

**Course Objectives:**

The students will be able to understand and master some basic statistical techniques with applications to data analysis.

**Prerequisites:** STA 4442 (Minimum Grade C).

**Quizzes:**

We will have 6 biweekly quizzes on the scheduled dates (1/29, 2/12, 3/5, 3/26, 4/9, and 4/23) in class. We will count only the best five of them for the final grade. Each quiz takes up to 20 minutes and is based on homework problems and examples presented in class.

**Assignments:**

There will be six biweekly homework assignments, but only the best five of them will count for the final grade. Assignments should be handed in on the due dates (1/27, 2/10, 3/3, 3/24, 4/7, 4/21). Late assignments will not be accepted.

**Grading:**

Grading will be based on the following weighting:

20% Assignments

10% Quizzes

20% Midterm I

20% Midterm II

30% Final exam

There will be no make-up midterms. If a student has an acceptable excuse for missing the midterms, the weight of the midterms will be shifted to the final. Make-up final exam will be given only under exceptional circumstance, and written, verifiable excuses must be provided

**Grading Scale:**

0-49%: F, 50-55%: D-, 56-59%: D, 60-62%: D+, 63-65%: C-, 66-72%: C, 73-76%: C+, 77-79%: B-, 80-85%: B, 86-87%: B+, 88-89%: A-, 90-100%: A.
