CONCERT OF FOLK MUSIC FROM SWEDEN AND NORWAY

There is a rich fiddling tradition in the Scandinavian countries.  And this culture is alive and well today with musicians composing tunes in traditional style.  During this concert you will hear tunes both old and new together with the stories which often accompany them.  They will be played on the fiddle and the hardingfele, the national instrument of Norway which is richly engraved and has sympathetic strings.

Bruce Sagan is an internationally acclaimed performer of folk music from Scandinavia.  He was awarded the Zorn Medal in bronze for his playing before a jury of Swedish tradition bearers.  This is an honor which has been given to very few non-Swedes.  And his CDs have garnered praise on both sides of the Atlantic.  The Swedish folk music magazine Spelmannen wrote that he plays "som en inföding" ("like a native").

Kultur Festival 2013
March 2 - March 9, 2013

Kultur Festival 2013 is the only festival of its kind in South Florida. This fifth annual celebration of Jewish culture includes eight days of concerts, film, author presentations, humor and book arts. The festival showcases Florida Atlantic University Libraries' Special Collections through the talents of guest artists, distinguished scholars and critically-acclaimed musicians, including the 25-piece Klezmer Company Orchestra (KCO), the library's professional ensemble-in-residence. Festival Director Aaron Kula and KCO perform the festival's main event 2nd Avenue Jazz'n Jive in concert with special guest vocalist and the Ebony Chorale of the Palm Beaches.

The festival takes place on FAU's Boca Raton campus at two venues: the Wimberly Library and the Carole and Barry Kaye Performing Arts Auditorium.

Kultur Festival 2013 has been made possible in part by the generous support of the Jewish Cultural Society at FAU.
